Commentary | On 16 July 1604, Niclaes Rauwart Jacobszoon, about 40 years old, living in the Warmoesstraet, was betrothed to Baartje Willemsdr., 34, living op 't Water, assisted by her parents Willem Willemsz. and Nelletgen Bartouts (DTB 665/367). The father was Willem Willemsz. Amelandt (of INVNO 1222) and the mother Nelletgen Barthouts Beynsdorp. Niclaes Rauwart was the son of the famous collector and amateur painter Jacob Rauwert, whose collection was cited by Carel van Mander (see M.J. Bok, Dawn of the Golden Age, Exh. Cat. Amsterdam, p. 159 and passim). Jacob Rauwart paid a tax of 120 f. in 1585, the 7th highest of all taxpayers. He died in 1597. The other children of Jacob Rauwart were: Maria, still alive, unmarried, in 1622 who received the net proceeds of this sale; Agnieta, born c. 1556, married Gerrit Govertsz. Souburch, old schepen of Gouda (probably of R 7632), died in 1621; and Brigitta (or Brechtgen) Raauwers (of INVNO 494), born ca. 1569, betrothed to Joost Gerritsz. van Duyvenlant (born in Leiden) and later to Cornelis van IJssel, heer van IJssel. The daughter of Joost Gerritsz. and Brechtgen Rauwaert, named Cornelia van Duyvenlant, was betrothed on 22 January 1620 to Jan Buytewegh, heer van Niewkoop, 29 years old. She was assisted by her uncle Gerrit Govertsz. Souburch and her aunt Maria Rauwarts (J.G. Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat? 1968). Jan Buytewech and Cornelia van Duyvenlandt were close acquaintances of Maria Thins, the R.C. mother-in-law of Johannes Vermeer (Montias, Vermeer and His Milieu, doc. 347). On 7 July 1622, Jan van Buytenwech, heer van Nierop, was named guardian over the children of Claes Rauwert and Brechtgen Willems (WK 5073/513, fol. 4vo.) In a document dated 19 October 1627, the children of the late Claes Jacobsz. and Baertgen Willems were said to be still minor. They were named as heirs of Baertgen's father Willem Willemsz., who was a soap boiler, and of Nelletge Barthouts (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933) and Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam p. 431). | |
