IntroductionOp den 12en februarij 1626 zyn ten versoeck van de erffgenamen van Anthony Smijters vercocht dese naervolgende goederen.
CommentaryAnthony Smijters was a France schoolmeester. On 29 July 1600 he appeared in de Pui for his betrothal. He was said to be from Antwerp and a widower of Margietje Marchiere. He was betrothed to Marie Gras (DTB 909/211). He acquired the poorterschap of Amsterdam in 1604. He ran a school for the sons of distinguished Amsterdam families. In 1601, Hans Thijsz. II (of R 27698) took lessons in arithmetic and accounting from him (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 198). On 23 April 1626, the Orphan Chamber authorized Mr. Hugo Cole, schoolmaster, and Samuel Maronnier to received certain goods from the estate of Anthony Smyters. They were apparently guardians over his children. Samuel Maronnier was also the guardian of the children left by Judith Maronnier (his sister ?), the wife of the painter Jacques Bols (R 31004 of Montias2). On 1 April 1629, Pieter de Bitter (of R 23618) was named guardian in their place (WK 5073/513, fol. 43). Note that the sale took place in two parts: the first on 12 February 1626, consisting of household goods, including inexpensive paintings, and the second on 18 February 1626 consisting mainly of books, but including a few expensive paintings. Smijters was Reformed (Calvinist) and the author of at least one psalm book. He was the father of Anna Smijters who married Michiel Parent in 1621 (R 24983 of Montias2) and the uncle of Samuel Smijters (of R 20183). For more bio details on Anthony Smijters, see the NOTES to R 29995 of Montias2.
