IntroductionOp den 15en july 1626 zijn ten versoecke van advocaet Schot vercoft de naervolgende schilderijen.
CommentaryOn 9 May 1624, Francois (signs Franciscus) Schot (II), doctor in medicine and law (beyde rechten), 25, assisted by his father Francois de Schott de oude (I) was betrothed to Hester de Waart, from Mastricht, 25, assisted by her sister Barbara de Waard and her brother-in-law Jacobus Roelandus (DTB 429/122). Francois de Schott I is probably identical with the former alderman of Antwerp of this name, who was present when the inventory of Elisabeth va Honsem, widow of Jacob de Schot (his putative brother), was drawn up (Duverger, Antwerpse inventarissen, 1(1984), p. 186). A portrait of Barbara de Weert, who is probably identical with the sister-in-law of Francois Schot II, was recorded in the inventory of Gillis Vertangen (married to Maria Gerrits) (INVNO 241, R 5689 of Montias2). On the betrothal of Franchoijs de Schot I with Isabeau Walraven, see the NOTES to R 23342 of Montias2. Francois (de) Schot (I) and his brothers Jacques (de) Schot (II) and Hans (de) Schot II were important cloth merchants. They were cousins of Hans van Solt II of R 21567 of Montias2. On 21 April 1625, the painter and dealer Abraham Jansz. Decker (of R 20970) transferred to advocate F. de Schot (II) his household goods valued at f. 705, of which f. 565:13:-- (for details, see R 20970). In a notarial act of 6 February 1632, Judith de Waert (the sister of Hester and Barbara de Waert cited above?) was said to be the widow of Franchoys de Schot (I?); she was presently the wife of notary Willem Cluyt (NA 372, fol. 13, Not. W. Cluyt). In an insinuation of 26 September 1635, both Franchoys de Schot, merchant (II?), living on the Keysersgracht, and his son, Franchoys de Schot de jonge (III?) were cited (NA 910, film 1146, Not. Eyloff). Jacques Schott (II), born in Antwerp about 1580, the son of Francois Schott I, was a cloth dealer, first in Middelburg, then in Amsterdam, where he had settled by 1619. He invested 3600 f. in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 579 and Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p.217). 313). He was betrothed to Hester de Becker on 1 February 1600. He then remarried with Rachel le Carlier, said Le Rideur, on 17 August 1615. She was the widow of Charles Godijn (I) (cited in the TEXT of R 1018 and R 805 of Montias1). He was one of 21 Lyeffhebbers van de Nederduytsche Poesy who provided subsidies to the poet Jan Jansz. Starter (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 54). On a dispute over the inheritance left by Charles Godin that pitted Jacques (de) Schott II against Samuel and Daniel Godin, see the TEXT of R 805.
