CommentaryPieter Claesz. Cod, lijnslager op 't Water in 't Wapen van Engeland, was the son of Claes Gerbrandsz. Schilt van Hoorn and of Tryn Jans ( Oud Holland 2(884), p. 55). He was baptized in Amsterdam on 17 January 1577, the son of Gerbrant Schilt, tar dealer in the Teertuijnen (Dudok van Heel in Jaarboek C.B.G. 26(1972)). He died in 1624 as the INTRO implies (not 1625 as per Elias). On 3 July 1623, he drew up a procuration to collect a debt from a shipmaker in Hoorn for rope delivered (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 496). The children of Pieter Claesz. Codde, living on the West side of the Niewendijck, paid a tax of 150 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 79 v., p. 19). This address seems compatible with the one given above. Pieter Claesz. Cod was almost certainly the brother of Lutje Claes, the first wife of Elbert Symonsz. Pool who lived close by (on the West side of Nieuwendijck, beyond the Sluice, on or close to the Capelsteegh). Elbert Pool died in 1620 (see INVNO 644). Pieter Claesz. Cod married Beyken Aggesdr., 1583-1607, daughter of Agge Jarichsz. and of Foockel Thomasdr. on 3 October 1602, and, in 1610, Josijntgen van der Wolff, daughter of Gerrit van der Wolff and Lijsbeth Jansdr., who died in Amsterdam before February 1625 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 449). On 8 March 1622, the masters of the Orphan Chamber named as guardians over the children of Pieter Claesz. lijnslager, Gerbrant Claesz. and Jacob Claesz. van Horen, the children's uncles (the brothers of Pieter Claesz.) On 24 January 1625, Jan Jansz. van Horen (de jonge) was named guardian over the three children left by Pieter Claesz. Coden, whose late mother was Beytgen Agges (WK 5073/513, fol. 26). Lucretia van Hoorn, the daughter of Jacob Claesz. van Hoorn, married Johannes van Uyttenbogaert of R 33328. A daughter of the second marriage of Pieter Claesz. Kod, named Foockeltge, was a buyer at the sale (R 25490), She married Jan Claesz. Ansloo, 1605-1647, in 1627 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 449). Another daughter of Pieter Codde and Josijntge van der Wolff, named Anna van Hoorn, married, first, Jan Aertsz. van der Heede (cited in the TEXT of R 133 of Montias1), and, second, Mr. Arnout Hellemans, knight, and captain of the Amsterdam militia in 1660 (Ons Voorgeslacht 55(2000), p. 54). Pieter Claesz. Cod was a witness at the marriage contract of Seger Pietersz., the brother of Pieter Lastman, with Grietge Cornelisdr. (GAA, NA 20 G, fol. 4, 1 September 1601). This is significant considering the presence of a painting that was almost certainly painted by Lastman in his inventory (R 25512 of Montias2). Another daughter of the second marriage of Pieter Claesz. Codde with Josijntje Gerrits van der Wolff, named Maria, born in 1619, married Arnout Hellemans Hooft, ridder, baptized on 23 December 1629, the son of Pieter Cornelisz. Hooft, Droost of Muiden, and of Lenora Hellemans, on 15 March 1665 (Jaarboek C.B.G. 35(1981), p. 91-2).
