Commentary | On 21 July 1616, Samuel Chavatte, 30 years old, assisted by his mother Simontgen de Blanck, living bij de Borse, was betrothed to Maria Gillis (signs Gilles), assisted by her parents Bretsje Gillis and Jenne Adijn, living in the Cellebroersstraet (DTB 420/245). Bretsje or Brisse Gilles, originally from Doornik, was a successful silk cloth merchant who invested 2,700 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 227). Samuel Savat paid a tax of 30 f. in 1631, at which time he lived either on the Sant or the Bisschop straet (Kohier, fol. 220 vo.). Just before 23 October 1636, Samuel Chavatte and his wife Maria Gillis drew up their testament in favor of their children Samuel (II) and Mattheus (NA 949, Not. B. Baddel). For more details on Samuel Chavatte (or Savat), see the notes to R 26634 of Montias2. |
