Commentary | Hendrick Hudde, 1591-1637, was an important merchant who traded with the Near East. In 1631, he paid a tax of 775 f. in 1631, at which time he was a member of the Raed of Amsterdam (Kohier, fol. 3, p. 2). He was betrothed to Clara Nijs (1599-1648) on 17 November 1616 (DTB 421/24; Elias, Vroedschap. p. 327). Clara Nijs was the daughter of Mayke Jacobs (the sister of Jacob Jacobsz. Rombouts of R 26961 of Montias2) and of Adam Nijs, sugar refiner from Antwerp (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 81). Hendrick Hudden was the brother of Gerrit Hudde of R 7698. Stadhouder Maurits named him commissaris in 1620 and schepen in 1622 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 327). Nevertheless, he was said to be more politique than true Calvinist. It may be noted that Hendrick Hudde lived on the Keisersgracht, whereas the address given for this sale was the Coningsgracht. It may be that the goods sold had been pledged by some anonymous individual to Hendrick Hudde who sold them when the debtor could not repay his debt. | |
