Commentary | Pieter Jacobsz. Rombouts, the son of Rombout Jacobsz. I (1550-1629) and of Claerken Claes Colijn, was born in Antwerp c. 1570. He lived first in the Warmoesstraet, later, after 1616, on the Monkelbaansburgwal (or Oude Schans) in de Indische Raven, whence he was known as Pieter Jacobsz. Indische Raven. After the death of his first wife, Elisabeth Willems, he was betrothed to Catharina van Wynegem, from Antwerp, on 12 August 1616 (DTB 420/264). He died in 1625; Catharina van Wynegem was buried in Amsterdam on 17 October 1645 (Elias, Vroedschap, p.80). On 16 January 1626, Jacques Jacobsz. Rombouts, Rombout Jacosz., and Rochus Pietersz., together with Wouter Lamberts and Gerrit Jacobsz. (Haringh), respectively the uncles and guardians of Rombout, 24, Pieter, 21, Sara, 18, and Christoffel, 15, the four children of minor age left by Pieter Jacobsz. Indische Raven, procreated by Lysbeth Willems, his first wife, together with Guilliam, 8, and Jan, 6, his children of the second bed with Catharina van Wynegem, brought assets to the Orphan Chamber on behalf of the children (WK 5073/789). Jacques (or Jacob) Jacobsz. Rombouts, born in Antwerp in 1581, merchant on the Lastage, married Maria du Gardyn on 20 April 1621. Rombout Jacobsz. de Jonge, baptized on 3 November 1585 in Amsterdam, prominent grain merchant, married Hillegonda van Baersdorp on 27 December 1616. Rochus Pietersz. (later van de Capelle), born in Delft in 1571, married Catharina Jacobs, the sister of Pieter Indische Raven I, on 23 November 1603 (Elias, op.cit. pp. 80 and 515). Hillegonda was the sister of Mr. Simon van Baersdorp, burgomaster of Leyden in 1638. They were the children of Jan Jansz. van Baersdorp and of Dirckgen Claes van Heemskerck (Elias, Vroedschap p. 77-8). Wouter Lambertsz., who was a guardian of the children of the deceased Pieter Indische Raven I, has not been identified. Gerrit Jacobsz. (Haringh) of R 27290 of Montias2, was the father of Elisabeth who married Christoffel Indische Raven, cited above. Several of Pieter Jacobsz. Rombouts's children bought works of art from this sale (see INVNO 666 in Montias2). On his brother Rombout Jacobsz. II and his sister Nelletje Jacobs, see R 26967 of Montias2. | |
