IntroductionGoederen vercoft ten versoeck van Gerrit Jacobsz. gecomen van Jacob Kina
CommentaryThis auction sale, only four lots of which were recorded without place or date, on the inside cover of the register beginning in 1613, is probably incomplete. The name of the owner of the goods is usually spelled Quina. There seems to have been two individuals by the name of Jacob (or Jaques) Quina, perhaps father and son. It seems to be the younger one who was a merchant in dyes, associated in a company with Charles and Jean Looten, whose daughter Cornelia, born in 1652, married Louis Wolters in 1681 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 516). On 14 October 1614, Jacob Kina (signed Quina), 26 years old, was betrothed to Susanna Jans living on the N.Z. Voorburgwal. She was assisted by her mother Adriana Lultell (DTB 418/219). This was probably the younger Quina and the owner of the paintings sold at this auction. The younger Kina was only 19 years old at the time of the Coninxloo sale of 1607, at least if he is the individual named Jacob Kina bij David Vinck-Boons who bought various drawings for 2 f. 15 st. The fact that he was bij Vinck-Boons may, but does not necessarily, imply that he was an apprentice painter.
