CommentaryOn 22 November 1593, Pieter Lodewycksz. and his wife Mari Jans had their twins Lodewijck and Jan baptized in the N.K. (DTB 38/319). Jan Pietersz., cited in the inventory, one of the buyers in this sale (R 29265 of Montias2), seems to have been one of the twin sons of Pieter Lodewycksz. He would have been 16 years old at the time of the sale. In her testament passed on 24 May 1605, Gierte Claes, the daughter of Claes Lambertsz. (of R 35924 of Montias2) named Pieter Lodewijksz., the son of her half sister, as her universal heir, in case the children of her brother Zacharias Claesz. (of INVNO 846) were to die first. The attractive possibility that Jan Pietersz. was the goldsmith, son of Pieter Lodewyx van den Eeckhout, who became the father of the Rembrandt pupil Garbrandt van den Eeckhout, must be rejected because the goldsmith was 22 years old in 1606 and thus born several years before the twins (cf. Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 324).
