Commentary | Steven Pinel, merchant from Antwerp, was first noted in Amsterdam in 1590 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden p. 311). He invested 5400 f. in V.O.C. shares in the first subscription in 1602. On 25 March 1605, Steven Pinel, born in Antwerp, widower of Geertruyd Reygers, was betrothed to Maria Berwijns, born in Antwerp, 23 years old, assisted by her father Bernard Berwijns (DTB 411/451). He must have died shortly before 10 April 1614 when the Orphan Chamber appointed Bartelemeus Moer (of R 21230) and Abraham van Beeck as guardians over his two children (WK 5073/513). The bankruptcy (or near-bankruptcy) of Abraham van Beeck in 1610 had evidently not been an obstacle to his appointment as guardian four years later (Gelderblom, op. cit., p. 231). On 22 January 1615, thus four months after the above-mentioned sale, Maria Berwijns remarried with Steven Geerards from Dordrecht (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister p. 119). Jacob Leeuwen and Jacob Symonsz. Lou to whom a part of the proceeds of the sale were paid may have been Steven Pinel's creditors. On Jacob Leeuwen, see R 20369. Jacob Symonsz. Lou is likely to be the soap boiler named Jacob Symonsz. cited in an act of 22 September 1605 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P., 69(1929), p. 632). Jacob Symonsz. was also the guardian of the children of Ael Huygens, widow of Cornelis Herwayer of INVNO 901. | |
