CommentaryHans van Gheel (or Geel) I was born in Antwerp (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 301). He seems to have been the brother of Daniel van Gheel I who fled in Antwerp in or about 1585 to settle in Amsterdam (see the NOTES to R 31393 of Montias2). He was an important merchant (dealing in cloth, cannons and other goods), who did business with the Near East and Italy. He was married to Maria Koeymans (Coymans or Coeymans), who was also from Antwerp. She was the daughter of Jeronimus Coymans I and Constantia Spinelli. Maria Koeymans (or Coeymans) was the sister of Jasper Coeymans I of R 31693 of Montias2, who bought lots at the present auction. On 17 November 1598, Hans van Geel and Maria Coymans had their daughter Maria baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Balthasar Symons and Clara Schurmans (DTB 38/367). The family name of Balthasar Symons was probably Appelman. His daughter Aeltge married Geurt Dircksz. van Beuningen, the father of Dirck Geurtsz. of R 21904. Clara Schurmans was the wife of Hans van Geel's son Maximiliaen. In their testament of 15 September 1599, Hans and Maria left 500 f. to the poor of the Nederlandsche-Duitsch Kerck and 200 f. to the Waalsche community. He paid a tax of 30 f. in 1585, at which time he lived on the East side of the Kerckstraet (Van Dillen, Amsterdam, p. 25). Hans van Geel I's daughter Catharina married Jacques Verbeeck of INVNO 544. After the death of Hans van Geel I, an inventory of his possessions owned in common with Maria Coeymans was taken on 27 March 1600 (NAA 20E/38, not. Salomon Henrix). On 16 January 1618, the children and heirs of Hans van Geel put up for sale the house de Fortuyn or Sandloper in the Warmoesstraet. The neighbors were the heirs of Jacob Gerritsz. Romeyn on the South side. The buyer for f. 4610 was the silk dealer Jacob (de) Bye, the sureties Alexander van der Hoeve (of R 20986) and Laurens Charles (of R 20464). On 7 May, Daniel and Jan van Geel (II), for themselves and as empowered by Leonard Sweerts, husband of Constantia van Geel transferred the deed of the house (kwitscheldte) to Jacob de Bye (Kam, Waar dat huis in de Warmoessraat?). In 1631, the widow of Jacques de Bye, living in the Warmoesstraet, paid a tax of 15 f. (Kohier fol. 172, p. 40). One son of Hans van Geel, Jan or Hans van Geel II, of R 37007, just cited, born in 1589, became director of the W.I. Company in 1636. He was associated in a firm with his brother Daniel van van Gheel (II). He married Elisabeth Lampsins on 5 September 1623 (Elias, Vroedschap, pp. 975-6). On 16 April 1628, Jean van Geel and Elisabeth Lampsins had their son Daniel baptized in the N.K. (DTB 40/447).
