Commentary | On 1 November 1601, the Orphan Chamber named as guardians over Jannetge, the daughter left by Mr. Thomas van Elder, goutsmeerder (goldsmith melting gold?), whose mother was Hilletge van de Voort, Pieter Segers and as his co-guardians Hendrick Verstegen and Hans van Ceulen. Thomas van Elder had apparently remarried with Hester Singemans, who was said to be his widow. As creditors of Thomas van Elder were named Gerrit van de Voort, for himself and on behalf of Adam van Steene, the uncle by marriage of the child, Pieter van Dilsen, as her granduncle on the father's side, Hans van Keulen, Huybert Otsen Willelaers, and Elder's widow Hester Singemans, assisted by her brother Pontiaen Singemans (WK 5073/513, fol. 103vo.) Pieter Zegersz. was the former bode of the Weeskamer, discharged qua Roman Catholic in 1578. He was married to Barbara Jacobs and was the father of the painters Pieter and Claes Lastman (cf. R 31152.) On 23 March 1604, Dirck Jacobsz. Hem, goldsmith, was named guardian over the children of Thomas van Elder, goutsmeerder (WK 5073/513, fol. 117vo.) |
