CommentaryThe late Pieter Dircksen van Brevliet was a wine merchant who lived on the O.Z. Voorburchwal, near the Bierkay. He was the brother-in-law of the engraver Jan Muller. On 14 January 1619, Jan Muller, engraver (plaetsnijder). Adriaen Muller, licentiate in law, secretary of the city of Emmerick, Pieter Dircksz. Breevliet, as husband and guardian of Lysbeth Harmans, Hillegont Harmans, assisted by Jan Valcxsz. (of R 21679), her chosen guardian in view of the absence of her husband Adriaen Hendricksz. Boot, and Maritgen Harmans, assisted by Mr. Jan Pietersz. Sem, her chosen guardian (the brother of Syvert Pietersz. Sem of R 27934), all children and heirs of Harmen Jansz. Muller, engraver of figures (figuersnijder). declared that they had all received their portions of the inheritance. Maritge Harmans was to keep the house De Gulde Passer in the Warmoesstraet, but would have to pay the debts of the estate and give Hillegont Harmans, Johan (Jan Muller), Mr. Adriaen, and Pieter Dircksz. (Brevliet) 400 f. each. The witnesses, both journeymen engravers (plaetsnijdersgesellen), were Abraham Hendricksz. Doeckman and Hendrick (Lourensz.) Roghman (of R 21939), who were most probably apprentices of Harmen or Jan Muller (Not. L. Lamberti, cited in N. de Roever, Jan Harmensz. Muller, Oud Holland, 3(1888), p. 270). The post-mortem inventory of Pieter Dircksz. Brevliet, wine dealer, was taken on 31 January 1625. It contained a portrait of Harmen Jansz. Muller (NA 590, film 4664). In his testament dated 11 August 1624, Jan Muller left to Dirck Pietersz., son of Pieter Dircksz. (Brevliet), his brother-in-law, all the books on art that might be useful for his studies ( Oud Holland 27(1909), p. 131). On 2 March 1634, Claertgen Pieters, daughter of Lysbeth Mullers, 24, and Dirck (Pietersz.) van Brevliet (the son of Pieter Dircksz. van Brevliet), at present outside the country, children of Hillegont Millers made a declaration concerning the estate of Adriaen Muller, which was heavily fraught with debts. The honorable Cornelis Dircksz. Cool (on whom see the NOTES to R 32237 of Montias2), as husband and gurardian of their aunt Maritgen Mullers, received one fifth of the house De Vergulde Passer on the Warmoesstraet (NA 595, fol. 482/3, Not. Lamberti). Note that Notary Lamberti was related by marriage to Cornelis Cool and, through him, with the Muller family (NOTES to R 32337 of Montias2).
