Commentary | The late Zacharias Claesz. was a merchant who freighted 5 ships between 1598 and 1605 (IJzerman, Econonisch-historisch jaarboek 17(1931), p.268 and Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van het Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 184(1983), p. 600.) His brother Lambert Claesz. freighted one ship in 1598 (IJzerman, ibid., p. 252). On 23 May 1603, Zacharias Claesz., 29 years old, living op 't Water, assisted by his father Claes Lambertsz., was betrothed to Jannetke van Stompwijck, 18, living on the N.Z. Achterburchwal, assisted by her father Pieter van Stompwijck and her petemoeij Marijtgen van Stompwijck (DTB 665/82). When Jannetke van Stompwijck remarried in January 1606, she had been 9 months a widow. The death of Zacharias Claesz. can therefore be placed in early 1605. On 2 April 1608, the Orphan Chamber appointed Lambert Claesz., the brother of Zacharias, as guardian over his orphan child (WK 5073/513, fol. 129vo.) It was presumably after the death of Lambert Claesz. that, on 22 October 1626, Lambert Gerritsz. Gent and Niclaes Wandelman were named guardians over the son of Zacharias Claesz. (WK 5073/513, fol. 48). Niclaes Wandelman (of R 30408) was the son of Mary van Stompwyck, who was undoubtedly a close relative of Zacharias's wife Jannetje van Stompwyck. |
