| Commentary | The name of the late owner of the goods sold is normally written Karel Kare, Carre, or Carree. On 13 June 1596, Carel Carree, from Antwerp, 25 years old, living on the Betanienstraet for the last 8 years, was betrothed to Barentgen Jansdr., from Zwolle, 28. He signs with an elaborate mark (he fully signs notarial documents) (DTB 408/37). On 6 July 1606, Carel and his wife had their son Jan baptized in the presence of Aeltge Cornelis in the N.K. (DTB 39/2). On 7 September 1611, Carel Caree, stone sculptor, acknowledged receiving the sume of 539 f. from Margrite Halfmere for sculpture work and carpentry (NA 38, film 52). On 7 February 1617, Carel Care, steenhouwer (stone carver), and Octaeff Laurens entered into an agreement for making posts for hearths (schoorstenen). Carel Care was to advance 200 f. for the enterprise without demanding interest on his investment. Octaeff Laurens was to get 15 stuivers a day while working on these posts. The profits over and above labor costs were to be shared half and half (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven, 78(1933), p. 228). On 5 December 1618, Meynert Jansz., tax master for bulk wares (grove waren) summoned a number of stone dealers and sculptors, including Carel Caree, to declare his stock of stones. He responded that he would come to the impostmaster to make his declaration (NA 381, fol. 542). On 25 March 1621, Trijntgen Louwers, widow of Carel Carree, steenhower, assisted by Lenaert Thonisz., schipper, her chosen guardian, presented the four children (Annetge, married to the sculptor Pieter Emanuels, Passchijntge, 19, Jan, 17, and Sara, 15) of her husband, whose mother was Barentge Jans, before the Orphan Chamber. The children were entitled to 2365 f. for their mother's inheritance (WK 5073/789, fol. 169). On 15 January 1627, the children and heirs of Karel Carre, steenhouwer, sold a house on the Koningsgracht named de Rot Steen, contiguous on the north side with the house of the children of bourgomaster Jacob Poppen. The house was sold to Pieter Emanuel, steenhouwer (the husband of Annetge, the eldest daughter of Carel Cre) for 3840 f. The sureties (borgen) were Hendrick Fredericksz., beer distributor (bierbeschoijer), of R 25295 of Montias2, and Gerrit Woutersz. mason. Another house on the Koningsgracht was sold to Jan Jansz. steenhouwer, one of the buyers at the Cre sale, for 2950 f. Still another house aen den Vesten was sold to Jan Carel, steenhouwer, perhaps the son of Carel Cre baptized in 1606, for 1120 f. (WK 5073/913). Pieter Emanuel seems to have remarried with Passchijntge Carels, the younger sister of his first wife Sara. On 20 August 1632, Pieter de Keyser, stadsbeeldhouwer, had a notary notify in an insinuatie directed at Passchjntgen Carels, widow of Pieter Emanuelsz., steenhouwer, asking payment for some sculpture (a preeckstoel etc..), which he, de Keyser, had undertaken on a half and half basis with her late husband, for Dominicus van Uffelen in Hamburg. He was owed 1169 f., minus 202 f. she had already paid him (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), pp. 810-811.) In 1631, Sara Caree, who was 15 years old in 1621, was the widow of Lubbert Gerritsz. blue dyer by 1631 (WK 5073/789, fol. 169). |
