Commentary | Burchgert Otten, tanner of chamois leather, was the son of Otto Borchers, of the same trade, and, probably of Jutgen Hermans. On 10 November 1602, Otto Borchers, seemtouwer, and Jutgen Hermans had their son Herman baptized in the O.K. (DTB 4/148). On 15 December 1620, Otto Burchertsz., Hetto Hermansz., and two other tanners were authorized to oversee the work of tanners in the suede-leather mills of the Elandstraet (see the NOTES to R 38080 of Montias2. Hetto Hermansz. may have been the brother of Otto's wife Jutgen Hermans. The owner of the goods sold, Burchgert Otten, possessed a musquet with bandelier and other shooters' equipment. On 19 June 1621, Burchert Ottens, from Zutphen, seemtouwer (chamois leather tanner), living in the Elandstraet, assisted by his father Otto Burchertsz., was betrothed to Trijntje Lodewycks, from Amsterdam, 20, assisted by her father Lodewyck Jansz. (DTB 426/114). On 17 August 1622, Burger Otten, zeemtouwer , appeared before the Orphan Chamber, and declared that his son Lodewijck, whose late mother was Styntgen (Trijntgen ?) Lodewycx, was entitled to 1300 f. for his mother's inheritance. Otto Burgertsz. and Albert Burgertsz., the father and uncle respectively of Burgart Otten, were guarantors (borgen) of the promised sum (WK 5073/789). In the present sale, Anneken Pauwels, d'vrou in huys bought 3 kinderen lyffges at the auction. She is probably identical with the woman of that name who was married to Hans Hermansz. of R 23692 of Montias. If so, she was Burchgert Otten's aunt (who may have lived in the house of her brother-in-law Otto Burchers). Also at the present sale, Otto Burchertsz. bought 1 capstock, 2 hoofgens for f. 1:13:--. A tax of 5 f. was paid in 1631 for Burchert Otten seemtouwers soon, one of the orphan children recognized by the Weeskamer (Kohier, fol. 314vo, p. 72). | |
