Commentary | The painter Barent Thonisz. or Thonissen was said to be living in de Halve Maen in de Warmoesstraet when he bought lots in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 for 16 stuivers (GAA, 38/21 F306). He was 25 years old when he was betrothed to Maritje Teunis on 26 April 1603. When she married Barent Teunisz., Maritje was said to be the widow of Jurriaen Frederixsz. (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, pp. 281-2). Maritje's son with Jurriaen Frederixsz., named Vrederick Jeuriaensz. in the INTRO above, was married to Neeltge Hermans, whose brother Albert Hermansz. was named guardian over Vrederick's son Jeuriaen Vredrix, who was thus Maritge's grandson (kints kint). Jan Thonisz. (Drent), likewise painter, of R 27557, was most probably the brother of Barent Thonisz. The heirs of Barent Thonisz., living on the side of the Amstel, op Vredenburch, paid a tax of 50 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 322vo., p. 74). After the death of Maritie Teunis, Barent Theunisz. passed his testament before Notary Lambert Lamberti on 16 September 1629. He probably died soon after. In an insinuation of 28 July 1634, the numerous heirs of Barent Theunisz. (listed in the NOTES to R 21348) complained that Nicolaes Cocqu, who had undertaken the administration of the estate and sold the movable goods that it contained had not produced a proper accounting of the moneys proceeding from this sale (NA 596, fol. 142, Not. Lamberti). Femmetge Theunis of INVNO 940 was the sister of Barent Theunisz. Among the books in the inventory: Institutie Calvini, Duijtse Bijbel, history of Daniel van Meteren, Schilder- Boeck of Karel van Mander. | |
