Commentary | Cornelis Cornelisz. Smout, born in Aachen, was buried in 1652. He was married to Cathalijntje Bastiaens who was buried on 5 November 1654. According to Dudok van Heel, she was named Catharina Scharckens in the INTRO to the present inventory by confusion with her mother Saertge Lourens Scharkens, the widow of Bastiaen Claesz. (probably of R 21609 of Montias2). She was the daughter of the silversmith Lourens Scherkens, cited in the NOTES to R 35688. The son of Cornelis Smout and Catharina Scharkens, named Nicolaes (1626/27-1695), in his testament of 1655, left a moortje tronij by Rembrandt to Vincent Hillemsberch and a painting representing de stilte (silence) to Johannes de Weert. According to Dudok van Heel, the connection of Nicolaes Smout with Rembrandt may have been through the militia. One of Nicolaes Smout's bequests in his testament of 1655 was to Guilliam van Swenderijck, who was the son of Elbert Willemsz. portrayed in The Night Watch. Swenderwijck was a schutter in the same regiment as Smout. The Smout family owned land in the Beemster where Carel Fabritius (one of whose paintings was owned by Nicolaes Smout) was born (Maandblad Amstelodamum 68(1981), pp. 29-30). Daniel Smout (1641-1690) was apparently the brother of Nicolaes Smout. He had an uncle of the same name (the son of Cornelia van der Hulst who was married to Cornelis Smout I, the father of Cornelis Cornelisz. Smout), who was buried on 19 June 1645 (Dudok van Heel, op. cit., pp. 29-30.) | |
