Commentary | The inventory of Willem Scriverius (the above-named Schrijver), dated 26 October 1661, cited in Bredius, Künstler-inventare, vol. 1, p. 216, apparently contained a number of the paintings listed in the present inventory. Note that Jan Heijndrixsz. Soop (Floris's father) was the son of the dairy merchant Heijndrick Pietersz. Schrijver. Already in 1612, according to an act dated 5 August, Jan Hendricx Soop was managing the glass house of the city on Kloverniersburgwal (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven 78(1933), p. 11). In 1614, he contributed lamps, apparently for a chandelier, included in the gift of the States General to the Sultan of Constantinople (Oud Holland 1(1883), p. 183). Jan Hendricx Soop was a Remonstrant. According to Wagenaar (Amsterdam, vol.3, p.499), Carel Leendarsz. and Jan Willemsz. Bogaert, who were vroom Calvinists (hardline) objected to the naming of Jan Hendricx Soop as captain of the Nieuwe Wendelen of the Amsterdam militia. There were portraits of Daniel, Mary, and Pieter Mathijsz. Schrijver in the present inventory (R 8552, R 8565, and R 8568 of Montias2). Pieter Mathijsz. Schrijver was a former alderman of Amsterdam and a Remonstrant, as was the (entire ?) family Schrijver. Jeronimus Ranst, cited in the INTRO, was named guardian over the children of Gommer Spranger of R 31375 on 25 November 1640 (WK 5073/789). For an inventory of goods he obtained in compensation for a debt, see INVNO 1334. Floris Soop, who lived from 1604 to 1657, was a director of the Amsterdam Schouwburg from 1638 to 1640. He was said to be a poet as well as a glass manufacturer (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 72(1981), p. 41). His portrait, as standard bearer, was painted by Rembrandt, perhaps in 1654 (see R 8663 of Montias2). | |
