Commentary | The biscuit baker and later spices dealer Cornelis Dircksz. Wittenoom, who lived from 1618-1665, was the son of Dirck Cornelisz. Wittenoom and of Magdalena Veris, the presumed sister of the painter Barent Jansz. Veris, at whose request this inventory was drawn up (see the INTRO). Magdalena Veris was cited in the TEXT of R 319 of Montias1. Eleven of Veris's paintings were recorded in the present inventory (0002[a] to 0002[k]). Cornelis Dircksz. was a director of the Amsterdam Schouwburg from 1652 until 1665 (Dudok van Heel in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 72(1980), p. 42). Dirck Cornelisz. Wittenoom was married (perhaps after the death of Magdalena Veris) to Welhoet Cornelis. A son of that marriage, named Jacob Wittenoom, born in Amsterdam in 1622, was also a spices merchant. He married Agnieta Colijn, the daughter of the book seller and printer Michiel Colijn (of R 22124 of Montias2) (Jaarboek Central Bureau voor Genealogie 14(1960). pp. 62-63). That Wittenoom was probably a Remonstrant, like his father-in-law Michiel Colijn, is inferred from his books, which included 't leven van Wttenbogaert, a volume of Arminius etc.. Wittenoom also owed Jan Claesz. Ansloo (probably de jonge of INVNO 113) one ninth part in a capital sum of 2000 gulden. |
