Mortimer was a collector, wool manufacturer and trader. He was born in Yorkshire, England and emigrated to the US in 1816, he retired wealthy in 1833.
Works of art once owned by Mortimer were lent to the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, 1909, Rembrandt Rijn, The Marquis d' Andelot, now in unknown location.
He was married to Harriette Mortimer (retrieved, 9/27/2007, NYtimes.com, June 6, 1882)
