historical notes Art collector, banker, utilities financier, and trustee of the National Gallery of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Chicago Art Institute, and Philadelphia Museum.

Dale and his wife, Maud Murray Dale (1953), who stimulated Dale's interest in collecting, collected 19th and 20th century art works including French Impressionism. After his first wife's death, he married Mary Tower Bullard.

Dale's collection included work by Corot, Delacroix, Degas, Matisse, Braque, Leger, Dufy, Derain, Vuillard, Modigliani, Dali, and American artists, John Smibert, Sully and other members of "the Eight." The bulk of his collection was left to the National Gallery, Washington, DC.
