Dale and his wife, Maud Murray Dale (1953), who stimulated Dale's interest in collecting, collected 19th and 20th century art works including French Impressionism. After his first wife's death, he married Mary Tower Bullard. Dale's collection included work by Corot, Delacroix, Degas, Matisse, Braque, Leger, Dufy, Derain, Vuillard, Modigliani, Dali, and American artists, John Smibert, Sully and other members of "the Eight."
