His father, also an art collector, was John Howard Whittemore (1837-1910). Whittemore began collecting art in the 1890’s, and his collection included paintings by, among others, J. A. M. Whistler, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, and Eugène Carrière. Whittemore's collection of etchings sold at a New York City auction via Parke-Bernet Galleries in 1949; the sale included work by, among others, Cassatt, Whistler, Degas, Muirhead Bone, James McBey, and Anders Zorn. In April 1938, forty two paintings from the Harris Whittemore collection were exhibited at Naugatuck's Tuttle House, as a benefit for the Children's Center. Works of art by Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, and J. A. M. Whistler, were included in the exhibition. Whittemore served on the board of the Eastern Malleable Iron Company, the New Haven Railroad, Landers, Frary & Clark (New Britain), National Malleable Castings Company (Cleveland), Link Belt Company (Chicago), American Pin Company, and the Colonial Trust Company (Hartford, CT). He belonged to the Metropolitan Club in New York City. Whittmore married Justine Morgan Brockway (1869-1940) in 1892, they had three children: a son, Harris Whittemore, Jr. (1894-1974); and two daughters, Helen Brockway Whittemore (1897-1932), and Gertrude Spencer Whittmore (1903-1987, m.
