historical notes Samuel Melvin Kootz was a lawyer and art dealer who owned and operated the Kootz Gallery in New York City.

Kootz exhibited and sold work by, among others, Romare Bearden, Robert Motherwell, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Arshile Gorky, James Brooks, William Baziotes, Herbert Ferber, Hans Hofmann, Georges Braque, Tony Rosenthal, and David Hare.

Kootz was married twice: first to Jane Ogden Kootz, 1909–1970; and Dr. Joyce Lowinson Kootz, 1925–.
