Francis Patrick Garvan was a collector of fine, decorative arts and books, a horseman, lawyer (Garvan & Armstrong, later Osborne, Lamb & Garvan), head of the Chemical Foundation, former United States Alien Property Custodian, and philanthropist.

The Garvan's collected early American furniture and silver. The Garvan's owned silver from several siversmiths including Benjamin Hiller, Jacob Hurd, John Edwards, Paul Revere and John Dixwell. Silver in the collection was from Marblehead, Salem, Concord, Worceter, Deerfiled, Newport, New Haven, New York and Philadelphia.

Garven belonged to the University, Yale, Manhattan, River, and Racquet and Tennis Clubs in New York City; and the Metropolitan, Chevy Chase, Congressional Country, and Riding and Hunt Clubs of Washington, D.C.
