historical notes John Kintzing Kane was a collector, lawyer, politician, jurist, an associate of Presidents Jackson and Polk, and served as the President of the American Philosophical Society (1856-1858).

Kane married Jane Duval Leiper in 1819, and had six children, of which two were famous in their own right; Elisha Kent Kane was a naval officer, physician and explorer, and Thomas L. Kane was an attorney, abolitionist and military officer who was influential in the western migration of the Latter-day Saint movement and served as a Union colonel and general of volunteers in the American Civil War.

Kane’s collection included a commissioned portrait by Thomas Sully.
