He was president of the Literary Society and the Philosophical Society and one of the founders of the New-York Historical Society—and its fourth president (1820-1827).

Dr. David Hosack established a botanic garden (the Elgin) at the centre of Manhattan Island and was an originator of the New York Horticultural Society, in 1818.
