Henry Gurdon Marquand was an art collector, philanthropist, businessman, banker, capitalist, and one of the founders and presidents of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Marquand's collection of paintings included work by Sir Alma-Tadema, Hoppner, JMW Turner, Edwin A Abbey, Thomas Gainsborough, George Romney, Sir Henry Raeburn, Sir Joshua Reynalds, Corot, August von Pettenkoffen, Troyon, Decamps, Rousseau, Millet, and Boughton.
Marquand’s art collection and rare books were sold at an auction in 1903. He was a benefactor of Princeton University and other institutions.
Marquand was a member for the Grolier, National Arts, the Sculpture Society, and Century Clubs. His son, Allan Marquand (b. 1853), graduated at Princeton in 1874, and in 1883 became professor of archaeology and art.
In 1884, Richard Morris Hunt designed Marquand’s residence on Madison Avenue complete with a music room in the Greek style, a Moorish smoking room, and a Japanese chamber.
