historical notes Charles Deering was an art collector, industrialist (Deering Harvester Company) and amateur artist.

Deering's collection included paintings, sculptures, prints, and rugs by, among others, John Singer Sargent and Augustus St. Gaudens. Some works of art from his collection were given to the Art Institute of Chicago, others were transferred to his Florida estate and given to his daughters, Marion and Barbara Deering Danielson (Mrs. Richard, 1888–1987).

Deering’s younger brother James Deering (1859–1925) and his daughter Marion Deering McCormick (1886–1965) were also art collectors. He was the son of Abby Reed Barbour and William Deering. Deering married twice: first in 1875, to Anna Case who died one year later; and then to Marion Whipple, in 1883, (1857–1945). He belonged to both the University and Union Clubs of New York.
