William Andrews Clark was a collector, banker, railroad man, copper-mine owner, businessman, served as U.S. Senator from Montana from 1899 to 1900 and again from 1901-1907.
Clark was married twice, his first wife was Kate L Stauffer, was from his hometown and his second, Anna Evangeline La Chapelle was a daughter of a Montana physician.
R Knoedler assisted Clark with many of his purchases.
In 1925, Clark bequeathed to the Corcoran Gallery of Art a collection of European and American art. More than two-thirds of the 158 European paintings in the Clark Collection are French.
Senator Clark spent part of each year in France from the late 1870s until the beginning of World War I.
Clark donated more than 800 objects to the Corcoran. His gift included work by Canova, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Corot, Rosseu, Degas, Cazins, Fraganard, Beauvais tapestry and Italian Majolica - sixteenth and seventeenth century.
