historical notes William T. Evans was a dry-goods merchant, art collector, and patron. He gave work from his collection to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the Montclair Museum.
He was a member of the Society of Art collectors. For their 1904 exhibition, he lent work by, among others, George H. Bogert, William Gedney Bunce, Charles H. Davis, Wyatt Eaton, William Morris Hunt, Winslow Homer, George Inness, John La Farge, Homer D. Martin, Alexander H. Wyant, and John H. Twachtman. According to his New York Times obituary, he also owned work by Childe Hassam, J. Alden Weir, Lillian Genth, and Ballard Williams.
According to the American Art Annual, Mr. Evans received visitors interested in art to his collection on Sundays from November 1st - May 1st, between the hours of 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. (Volume 1, 1899, pg. 232).
