Ford served as the Treasurer of Brooklyn Art Association (1862–1891), which later became the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He served as president of the New London, Willimantic, and Palmer Railroad Company from 1852 to 1856. Ford collected paintings, books, manuscripts, and Americana. He and his wife, Emily Ellsworth Fowler Ford (1826–1893), purchased work by the American Pre-Raphaelites including John William Hill.
