Ford was a New York City lawyer, collector and Treasurer of Brooklyn Art Association (1862-1891) which later became the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
At the time of his death, Ford donated his private library to the New York Public library.
Ford was president of the New London, Willimantic, and Palmer Railroad Company (1852).
