Taft was an art collector, patron, businessman, and was elected Governor of Rhode Island in 1888. Part of his collection is now at Rhode Island Institute of Design.
He was president of both the Merchants National Bank and Boston & Providence Railroad, director of the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad.
