historical notes Benjamin Franklin Jones was an art collector, philanthropist, steel manufacturer (Jones & Laughlin formerly The American Iron Works), and served on the boards of The National Union Fire Insurance Co. and Union Trust Co. of Pittsburgh.

He and his wife, Sue Duff Dalzell Jones (1866-1941), owned works of art by, among others, James Northcote, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Sir William Beechey, Sir Henry Raeburn, Henri Harpignies, Emile van Marcke de Lummen, George Inness, Jean-Charles Cazin, Edward W. Redfield and Ernest Lawson.
