Mills, Darius O. (Darius Ogden), 1825-1910 print view role Collector dates 1825-1910 city New York City state NY other cities Sacramento, CA; San Francisco, CA; Salem, NY; Buffalo, NY; sex M historical notes Darius Ogden Mills was an art collector, California pioneer, merchant, banker, real estate investor, hotelier (Mills Hotel) and philanthropist who established the first banking house in California (Gold Bank of D. O. Mills & Co.). He served as president of the New York Botanical Garden and a trustee of the American Museum of Natural History, Metropolitan Museum of Art, American Geographical Society, and the Lick estate and Lick observatory. According to The Art Treasures of America, Mills owned a Jean Léon Gérôme as well as works by: Jules Benczur, J. Benedicter, G. Bockmann, Rosa Bonheur, W.A. Bouguereau, L. Bourges, W. Bradford, F.E. Church, E. Cobbet, T. Couture, A.G. Decamps, P. Delaroche, G. De Nittis, B. Desgoffe, N. Diaz, W. Diez, P. Dubois, J. Dupre, J.L. Gerome, George Inness, Charles Jacque, L. Knaus, J.P. Laurens, Baron H. Leys, E.V. Luminais, R. Madrazo, G. Massini, G. Max, J.L.E Meissonier, F.P. Michetti, David Neal, D.M. Rico, T. Rousseau, F. Roybet, A. Schreyer, A. Simonetti, A. Toussaint, C. Troyon, E. Van Marchke, J.G. Vibert, Jose Villegas, J.F. Weir, E. Zamacois, F. Ziem.
