historical notes John La Farge was an art collector, artist, decorator and writer. La Farge collected Japanese prints and specialized in nineteenth-century prints by Hiroshige and Hokusai.

Work from his art collection was sold via Anderson Art Galleries, New York in both 1908 and after his death in 1911.

La Farge married Margaret Mason Perry in 1861.
