historical notes James Joseph Speyer was an art collector, philanthropist and banker, Speyer & Co. (senior partner, 1899–1939).

Speyer owned work by, among others, Jean Marc Nattier, Nicolas de Largilliere, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Hubert Robert, Jean Baptiste Huet, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Francesco Guardi, and Ralph Blakelock.
