historical notes Scott was an art collector, businessman and president of the Union Iron Works. He owned a collection of European and American paintings which was sold at a New York auction via the American Art Association in February of 1906.

Scott was president of the following societies and institutions: Washington Irving Literary Society (1857-1860), Addisonian Society (1863-1865), Haward Street Literary Society (1865-1869), Mecahnic's Instutute (1878-1880), Authors' Carnival (1880), Art Association (1876-1881), Commercial Museum of the Pacific Coast, California State Commission to the Columbian Exposition (1892-1893), and Young Men's Republican Club (1865-1872).

According to The Art Treasures of America, Scott owned works by H. Bethke, W. A. Bouguereau, F. Bouvey, J. G. Brown, A. Edelfelt, S. J. Guy, T. Hill, J. Hintz, W. Keith, P. Michis, H. H. Moore, E. Narjot, E. Normand, B. Piltz, E. Richter, L. C. Roessler, N. Rogge, T. Rosenthal, H. Savry, A. Schreyer, J. Tavernier, H. Thompson, A. Van Der Venne, and J. G. Vibert.
