Mason was a master mechanical engineer and builder of railroad steam locomotives. He founded Mason Machine Works of Taunton, Massachusetts. His company was a significant supplier of locomotives and rifles for the Union Army during the American Civil War.
According to The Art Treasures of America, Mason owned works by C. Baugniet, W. A. Bouguereau, C. E. Boutibonne, W. Bradford, Anton Braith, M. Calisch, J. Caraud, J. D. Court, Claude Dubuffe, I. Leon Y Escosura, E. Le Poittevin, H. Merle, J. G. Meyer von Bremen, Carl Millner, C. L. Muller, F. Raffaen, T. A. Roffenboom and M. How, Ph. Sadic, J. Sinkel, A. Toulmouche, E. Verboekhoven, F. Willems, and R. S. Zimmermann.
