Ruth McClymonds Maitland inherited a collection of Mid-19th century French paintings from her father, James Walter McClymonds (1842–1912), and added contemporary and old master paintings, drawings, prints, and photography.
Maitland owned works of art by, among others, Rembrandt Van Rijn, Albrecht Durer, Francisco Goya, Jean Francois, James McNeill Whistler, Jean-Francois Millet, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Paul Cézanne, Mary Cassat, Henri Matisse, George Braque, Pablo Picasso, Alexej Jawlensk y, Amadeo Modigliani, Giorgio de Chirico, Juan Miro, Henri Rousseau, Millard Sheets, Arthur B. Davies, Edward Weston, Diego Rivera, and Edward Hopper.
Chair of the California Public Work of Art Project general committee, member of the Paul Landacre Association, Maitland was a member of the California Art Club and her collection was exhibited at the Los Angeles County Art Museum, the Chelsea Gallery, the Dickinson Art Center of the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Dallas Public Art Gallery.
Ruth Maitland was also known as Mrs. L.M. Maitland after her physician husband, Leslie MacKenzie Maitland (b. 1883/84). Her son, Walter Maitland (1912–1989), inherited and dispersed her collection.
