historical notes Liberty Emery Holden was an art collector, attorney, proprietor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper, real estate developer, owned the Hollenden Hotel, mine owner, president of the Union Club of Cleveland, mayor of Bratenahl Village, OH, trustee of Western Reserve University and Adelbert College.

Holden married Delia Elizabeth Bulkley on 14 Aug. 1860. Mrs. Holden gave the collection with additions to the Cleveland museum in 1914 (W. G. Constable, Art Collecting in the United States of America, 1964).
