James Lenox was a lawyer, businessman, philanthropist, art and book collector. He never married and was the son of the Scottish born American merchant and real estate investor Robert Lenox (1759-1839).
A graduate of Columbia College, Lenox was a founder of the Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, Trustee of Princeton University, and member of the New York City Chamber of Commerce.
His collection of paintings and books eventually became known as the Lenox Library and later became part of the New York Public Library in 1895. In 1913, the collection was moved to the central library.
Lenox is mentioned in Frederick Baekeland's "Collectors of American Painting, 1813-1913," American Art Review, 3, Nov.-Dec. 1976.
Lenox owned work by, among others, Gilbert Stuart, John Singleton Copley, James Peale, Thomas Cole, Frederick Edwin Church, J M W Turner, and Albert Bierstadt.
