historical notes James Jackson Jarves was an art collector, scholar, critic, newspaper editor (est. The Polynesian in 1940) and the son/heir of Deming Jarves (1790-1869, founder of the Sandwich Glass Co).

The Jarves' Art collection was disbursed and can be found at the Yale University Art Gallery (Yale purchased its portion in, The Cleveland Museum of Art, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In 1879, Jarves acquired a collection of approximately 650 plus drawings, formed by Count Alessandro Maggiori (Fermo, 1764-1834), from a member of the Leopardi Family of Fermo. In 1880, after cataloging the collection, Jarves sold it to Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877), in turn Vanderbilt gifted the collection in its entirety to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1880.

Jarves married Elizabeth Russell Swain in 1838, she died in 1861, and in 1862, he married Isabella Kast Heyden.
