historical notes
|
Bayard Rustin was an art and antiques collector, patron, and American civil rights activist associated with the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, Fellowship of Reconciliation, Martin Luther King Jr., Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), and the A. Philip Randolph Institute, the American Friends Service Committee, the Socialist Party, and the War Resisters League.
In addition to collecting 15th-, 16th- and 17th-century religious art and icons, Rustin collected African, Asian and other European art.
Among his possessions were several balusters he recovered from the McKim, Mead & White's old Pennsylvania Station.
Rustin left all of his possessions to his adopted son Walter Naegle.
