historical notes Dominique de Menil was an art collector and philanthropist, she was married Jean (later John) de Menil in 1931, and in 1941, left France, settling in Houston.

Dominque and her husband created the Menil Foundation in Houston, Texas, and built an art collection which ranged from Etruscan art to Cycladic sculptures, Byzantine bronzes, African tribal art, Surrealist paintings and contemporary art of their time.

The Menil collection concentrates on three genres/periods of art; they are Antiquity, Byzantine and Medieval, Tribal, and Twentieth-Century Art. The collection includes work by Cezanne, Ernst, Twombly, and Rothko. The Rothko Chapel was founded by John and Dominique de Menil and was dedicated in 1971 as an intimate sanctuary available to people of every belief.

Mrs. de Menil commissioned the Italian architect Renzo Piano to build a museum to house their collection, the museum opened in 1987.
