historical notes

William A Slater founded the Slater Memorial Museum, in 1886, to memorialize his father, John Fox Slater (1815-1884).
He sponsored the construction of Norwich’s “Broadway Theater” and numerous performances in it. At the same time, his philanthropy provided for the expansion of educational opportunities and affordable access to the arts for Norwich’s citizens. His generosity touched every resident of the city in someway. (http://www.norwichfreeacademy.com/museum)
Mrs. W A Slater lent the following artwork to the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, 1909:
Portrait of and Old Man - Rembrandt van Rijn, location unknown today.
Dunes near Haarlem - Jacob van Ruisdael
