historical notes Robert Gilmor, Jr. was a merchant, ship owner, East-Indian importer and collector who collected art, rare books, autographs, coins, antiquities, stamps, minerals and rocks.

Gilmor’s art collection consisted primarily of 14th century Old Masters and 17th century Dutch and Flemish works, many of which were entered in John Smith’s A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of the Most Eminent Dutch, Flemish and French Painters.

The bulk of Gilmor’s art collection was European, 14th century Old Masters and 17th century Dutch and Flemish works. Gilmor was a supporter of American artists and own works by Francis Guy, Thomas Cole, Horatio Greenough, Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Sully, and Henry Inman, John Trumbull, and A.S. Mount.

In 1807, Gilmor married Sarah Reeve Ladson who was the daughter of Major James Ladson, of Charleston, SC. Both he and his wife had their portraits done by Thomas Sully (1783- 1872), they now reside in the Gibbes Museum, Charleston, SC.
