historical notes John Michael Crichton, aka Michael Crichton, was a writer, filmmaker, and art collector.

Crichton collected work by 20th century artists including, among others, Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, Mark Tansey, Pablo Picasso, Andreas Gursky, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Frank Stella and David Hockney.

Crichton joined the board of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2006 and loaned the museum some the work from his collection to go on display in the Broad Contemporary Art Museum.

Crichton used the following pseudonyms: Jeffrey Hudson, John Lange,and Michael Douglas (Joint pseudonym of Douglas Crichton and Michael Crichton).

Christie's auction house is reported to sale 80% of Crichton's collection in the spring of 2010. Some of the works featured in the sale are as follows:

• Pablo Picasso, Femme et fillettes (Woman and Children), 1961
• Roy Lichtenstein, Girl in Water, 1965
