historical notes William Henry Vanderbilt was an art collector, businessman and the son of railroad mogul "The Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794–1877).

Vanderbilt's collection included work by Millet, Alma-Tadema, G. Boldini, George A. Baker, Jules Breton, Rosa Bonheur, Corot, Cabanel, Diaz, Dupré, Fortuny, Knaus, Meissonier, Madrazo, Troyon, van Marcke, and Turner.

Vanderbilt was married (1841–1885) to Maria Louisa Kissam (1821–1896).
