historical notes John Cranch was a portrait painter and print collector (primarily European engravings) who acquired several hundred prints, mainly 17th and 18th century engravings of Renaissance paintings and sculptures. Cranch also purchased views of Italy and costume prints.

In 1896, his widow Charlotte Cranch (aunt of art critic Russell Sturgis) donated to the National Academy Cranches print collection.

Additionally she gave the Smithsonian Institution (National Museum of American History) engravings of Renaissance paintings and sculpture he collected while in traveling in Italy in the 1830’s.
